October 8, 1992 - Even though it was one of the biggest video game launches of its time, Mortal Kombat was amazingly conceived by only four people: programmer Ed Boon, comic book artist John Tobias, artist John Vogel, and sound designer Dan Forden. About a year after its launch as an upright arcade game in 1992, MK went even further and was released on Nintendo’s Super NES and Game Boy, and Sega Enterprises’ Sega Genesis and Game Gear, on aptly named "Mortal Monday". This year, even, the Mortal Kombat film series based upon the same game was rebooted. Of course, the game was (and still is) fairly violent, so much the public backlash received back then caused the video game industry to form the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), which has been in place since 1994.
