Upon Further Review

Originally pioneered by George Retzlaff in 1955 using a wet-film or kinescope replay for a National Hockey League (NHL) game (airing several minutes later on TV), this methodology was further improved to be "instant" in 1963 by then CBS Sports Director Tony Verna. He created a system using a standard videotape to instantly replay the network's coverage of the Army-Navy game. Before instant replay, it was nearly impossible to portray the nitty-gritty details of American football and it has been credited as a primary factor in its rise in popularity.Since then, instant replay has been prevalent in American football, but baseball has been very resistant to its use. It was only somewhat recently implemented by Major League (MLB) during the 2008 season during a game in which Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees hit a ball close to the left-field foul pole that one of the umpires initially ruled as a home run. This was challenged by the Tampa Bay Rays as a foul but "upon further review" the home run was upheld.Read More: A Brief History of Instant Replay
