CD Player Commercially Released

October 1, 1982 - For a whopping $730, the first commercially released CD player was launched in Japan. The following March, it was released worldwide. Even though the CD itself was initially designed to succeed the gramophone record in playing music, it also served as a data storage medium. At the time, the record industry viewed the CD as a threat.
