TECH TIME TRAVEL

Into the Ether

May 22, 1973 - Robert Metcalfe, a researcher at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center proposes "Ethernet". Metcalfe and his team were assigned to a network problem of connecting a workstation with a printer (of course, always printers). While working, Metcalfe wrote out a memo on an IBM Selectric typewriter that read "Ether Acquisition" with hand-drawn diagrams, showing `boosters' interconnecting branched cable, telephone, and radio ethers. Little did he know that this would spark what we now call the internet. Rather than giving it a more traditional name, Metcalfe instead borrowed an obsolete phrase from 19th-century physics, "luminiferous ether".
