May 20, 1932 - FIve years to the day after Charles Lindberg made his historic solo flight across the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart makes history as the first woman to fly solo. Four years before, she had made history as the first woman to cross the Atlantic in the air as part of a three-person crew. Her passage gave her celebrity status and the opportunity to make history a second time. Her 1932 flight lasted 15 hours, and she received the Distinguished Flying Cross from Congress for her achievement.
