May 13, 1861 - The Great Comet of 1861 is discovered over New South Wales. John Tebbutt, an Australian astronomer, observed the comet in the western sky on the night of May 13. In his memoirs, Tebbutt describes the comet as faint but notes that "I accordingly made up my mind to watch it, and it is well that I did so, otherwise I should have missed one of the best opportunities for introducing myself to the astronomical world. ..."
