NFL Adopts Instant Replay

March 11, 1986 - The National Football League adopts an instant replay system. Many team owners were skeptical of the system, and the vote to use instant replay in the postseason passed with only two votes over the necessary 21 and a compromise that it would be voted on again in the next offseason. The rule was renewed until 1991 when 17 owners voted against the rule. In the late '90s, a new batch of owners were curious to see how an improved system would affect gameplay.
