Hackers Decipher DES

June 17, 1997- after five months of work, a group of Hackers formed on the internet deciphered computer code written in the Data Encryption Standard (DES), the strongest legally exportable encryption software in the United States. It served as the gold standard of the time and was used to encrypt virtually all sensitive data. Following this massive breach of security, the United States banned stronger encryption software out of fear that it would be used by terrorists. Despite this, companies designing the software asserted that such restrictions are worthless because foreign countries offer much stronger programs.
