Transatlantic Telegraph Cable Laid

June 10, 1858 - Working together across the Atlantic, the United States and Britain loaned two ships to the Atlantic Telegraph Company on their mission to link the "new" and "old" world. The Atlantic Telegraph Company first attempted to lay cable across the sea in 1857, but problems arose with the USS Niagra's cable-laying machinery and the telegraph cable snapped off the coast of Newfoundland.
