It's-a Mario Time

July 9, 1981 - Today marks both Mario and Donkey Kong's 40th birthday. The game Donkey Kong was originally created to help get then Japanese playing card and toy company Nintendo a leg up in the American game market. Created by Shigeru Miyamoto, the Italian plumber was initially called "Mr. Video" but was later renamed Mario, after American real estate and business developer Mario Segale, who was renting out Nintendo some space at the time.
