Two Weeks to Two Minutes

July 27, 1866 - The first transatlantic telegraph cable was successfully put into service for public use. This cable ran all the way from Heart's Content in Newfoundland, Canada, to Valentia Island, Ireland. This amazing feat cut down communication time between Europe and the Americas considerably - allowing both a message and a response in the same day. Prior to this, communications between the continents took place only via ship. Now, however, they could transmit eight words a minute - 80 times faster than the first cable attempt which had failed in 1858 due to the deterioration of the cable's insulation.
