First Transcontinental Phone Call
July 29, 1914 - After five years of working towards a way to connect the east and west coasts, AT&T conducts the first test transcontinental telephone call. Thanks to inventor Lee de Forest, audions, a vacuum tube device that amplified weak electrical signals, allowed AT&T to lengthen the distance a voice could travel on telephone wires. When he first tested the phone line, company president Theodore Vail's voice was boosted in Pittsburgh, Omaha, and Salt Lake City. Decades after the first telephone call, Alexander Bell recreated that moment when the Transcontinental Phone line went into commercial service.
