Sony Walkman Debuts

July 1, 1989 - This week in 1979, the Sony Walkman made its debut in Japan, selling more than six times what was originally predicted. The following year, it went on sale in the US first under the name “Soundabout” – only later to be renamed in the early 1980s to "Walkman" as it caught on globally. The first prototype was modeled after a compact cassette recorder designed for journalists. The Walkman changed the relationship between humans and music in that the devices were wholly personal in nature – rather than listening through a radio, boombox, or record player, people could now listen to the music of their own choice with headphones on, creating a more private listening environment. 10 years after the original launch, over 100 million Walkmans had been sold worldwide.Read More: The Sony Walkman changed how we listen to music, A Brief History of The Walkman
