Gould-en Boy

July 17, 1920 - Approximately one hundred and one years ago, American physicist Gordon Gould was born. He is often credited with the invention of the laser. Unfortunately for Gordon, he incorrectly believed that he needed to build a working laser to achieve a patent for his invention. This ultimately led to years of fights for the laser patent. Gould’s patent made the first recorded use of the LASER acronym: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.Later, ARPA funded Gould’s research project to create a laser, but ironically he wasn’t allowed the proper clearance to work on it. Theodore Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories helped build the first working laser; Charles Townes (credited with inventing the maser, the forerunner of the laser) and Leonard Schawlow inspired the theoretical work behind it. Gould ended up fighting the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for 30 years; however, he was able to obtain patents on the laser in many other countries. Historians still question who should receive credit for inventing the laser.Read More: Gordon Gould, Bright Idea, Laser Fest

When we do visit the online content, our browser is filled with multiple pop-ups, videos, and other intrusions. Read More...
