Sony Walkman Released

July 1, 1979 - A year before its release in the United States, Sony releases the Walkman in Japan, forever changing the way we listen to music on the go. Masaru Ibuka is credited with the idea of the Walkman after asking another executive to design a playback-only stereo for headphone use. Sony expected to sell 5,000 units a month but exceeded 30,000 sales in the first two months of the Walkman's release.
