First Commercial Transatlantic Phone Call

January 7, 1927 - The first transatlantic commercial phone call took place between Walter S. Gifford, President of AT&T in New York, and Sir Evelyn P. Murray, Head of Britain's General Post Office. The call was transmitted by radio waves rather than wire across the Atlantic Ocean. Following the first call, over 30 calls between the United States and London took place that day, with over $6 million worth in business transactions taking place during those calls.
