Concorde Lifts Off for the First Time

January 21, 1976 - The Concorde Supersonic airliner began commercial operation. The Franco-British jet's first routes were London-Bahrain and Paris- Rio de Janeiro. Initially, the Concorde was banned in the United States over concerns of the sonic booms, but by May of 1976, Air France and British Airways began service to Dulles International Airport. The Concorde could reach speeds over twice the speed of sound at Mach 2, and it took about three and a half hours to fly from London to New York. The Concorde was retired on October 24, 2003, after 27 years of service. Read more about the Concorde and its history.
