The Space-Age Email 

August 4, 1991 - This week 30 years ago, email made its "space-age debut" on the shuttle Atlantis. A test email message was sent in an effort to develop a system of communication for a space station. The email experiment was conducted by Astronauts Shannon Lucid and James Adamson by sending an email to Marcia Ivins at the Johnson Space Center. The message used a satellite in NASA's system and was a test for a larger project. This project was directed at developing a computer and communication system on Space Station Freedom, planned to be built in the late 1980s. The Space Station Freedom project was put on hold due to budget cuts and political inviability, but later on, it was converted into being part of the International Space Station. Read More: Origins of the International Space Station, International Space StationHistory and Timeline of the ISS
