Linux Turns 30
August 25, 1991 - Thirty years ago this week, Linux, the free and open-source family of operating systems based on the Linux kernel, was born. Created by Linus Torvalds, Linux distributions such as Debian, Fedora, and Ubuntu power over 90% of cloud infrastructure to this day. Though not used as widely in desktop computers, Linux-based smartphones, netbooks, and servers dominate the tech industry. Linux is the beating heart of modern computing. The little penguin mascot powers everything ranging from high-speed trains and space robots to supercomputers and Tesla automobiles.Adoption of Linux really took off in the mid-90s within the supercomputing community, organizations such as NASA starting switching to Linux, due to its low cost and ease of customization. Commercially, Dell, IBM, and HP looked to Linux in order to move away from Microsoft's dominance in the desktop OS market. Even in film production, Linux has been the platform of choice - with Titanic marking the first major film produced on Linux servers in 1997.Happy 30th Birthday, Linux!
