IBM Releases the Personal Computer

August 12, 1981 - IBM releases the first PC, starting its foray into microcomputing. After seeing other microcomputer companies like Apple, Commodore, and even Hewlett-Packard rake in $15 billion in sales at the end of the 70s, IBM raced to design and build a PC for quick release that would act as a stand-in while IBM designed a "real" PC. Despite the off-the-shelf nature of the PC's design, the computer was incredibly popular, and IBM sold up to 40,000 computers one month, and over 750,000 in 1983.Read more about the standard of the personal computer.
