Sony Launches Betamax

April 16, 1975 - Sony launched the Betamax format in Japan. The Betamax cassette was a revolutionary videocassette format that took part in the Videotape Format War of the late 1970s. This was was a period of intense competition of incompatible models of consumer-level analog video videocassettes and recorders. Betamax eventually lost to VHS and is now considered obsolete.The origin of the name came from “‘Beta", the Japanese word used to describe the way signals were recorded onto the tape. The tape path in the new loading system also closely resembled the Greek letter beta. This symbol is associated with good luck and can be construed as a drawn-out pronunciation of the word "better."Read More: Sony's Complete Corporate History
