Ethernet Blue Book Released to the Public
September 30, 1980 - The first ethernet standard is released to the public in a collaboration between DEC, Intel, and Xerox. Robert Metcalfe began the development of ethernet in 1974 while at Xerox, and the first private ethernet network is deployed two years later. In 1979, Metcalfe leaves Xerox to form his own company, while convincing Xerox, Intel, and DEC to work together to make ethernet the standard. Now, ethernet is the most common LAN (local access network) in homes and businesses.
