Barcode Patented
October 7, 1952 - Inventors and Drexel University graduate students Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver receive the patent for the barcode. After a local grocery store inquired the university about an automatic way to read product information during checkout, Silver and Woodland began working on a solution. After testing a method using ultraviolet light-sensitive ink and deciding that it was too costly, the pair came up with a method through "the medium of identifying patterns." They submitted the patent application on October 20, 1947. The first commercial barcode was used in 1966.
