U.S. Air Force Pilot Chuck Yeager breaks sound barrier

October 14, 1952 - USAF Test Pilot Chuck Yeager breaks the sound barrier in the experimental X-1 aircraft developed by Bell Aircraft Company. After years of aviators believing it was unsafe for humans to fly at the speed of sound, thinking that the aircraft might fall apart. Yeager and his plane, Glamorous Glennis, named for his wife, broke the sound barrier at 40,000 going 662 MPH. The X-1 was designed with thin, unswept wings and a fuselage that resembled a .50 caliber bullet. Because the project was a secret, its success wasn't announced until June 1948.Read more about the first man to break the sound barrier.
