Compaq announces the Compaq Portable
November 4, 1982 - Compaq Computer Corporation releases its first product: the Compaq Portable. The Portable was able to run all of the software being developed for the IBM PC and was the first of the "clone" computers that reduced IBM's share in the computer market. By reverse engineering BIOS, Compaq was able to create a perfectly legal and IBM-compatible operating system for the Portable.
