Author of the 1st Law of Thermodynamics Born
November 25, 1818 - Julius Robert von Mayer was born in Heilbronn, Württemberg. An accomplished physicist and physician, von Mayer is best known for his 1841 paper that first wrote out the "conservation law of force" later known as the first law of thermodynamics which states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. von Mayer first became interested in this phenomenon while at sea. He was fascinated with the reason behind the warmth of storm-whipped waves versus cooler, calmer seas, and set out to discover the reason why.
