The telephone gets a keypad

November 18, 1963 - Bell Telephone introduces the first electronic push-button telephone, the successor to the rotary phone. The dual-tone multi-frequency technology trademarked as Touch Tone used mechanically activated reeds to produce a different tone for each button on the keypad as a user dialed a number. Touch Tone eventually became the worldwide standard for telecommunications signaling.
