Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Reaches the Red Planet
March 10, 2006 - NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) enters its initial orbit of Mars’s atmosphere. The MRO’s primary objective was to search for water on Mars and search for potential landing sites for future surface missions to Mars. The MRO was launched on August 12, 2005 from Cape Canaveral and was expected to operate for only six years. To this day, the MRO continues to send data and images of Mars’s surface back to earth.
