Samuel Morse demonstrates the telegraph
January 6, 1838 - Samuel Morse demonstrates his telegraph at Speedwell Iron Works in New Jersey. Morse, with two partners, spent six years developing the telegraph after hearing about the electromagnet. The telegraph uses wires to transmit electric pulses to transmit encoded messages. During the demonstration, the pulses were in Morse code, which became the standard for telegraph communications. Read more about early forms of long-distance communications.
