First Manmade Object to Reach Space
February 24, 1949 - The Bumper 5 rocket becomes the first US rocket to reach outer space. Bumper 5 was launched from White Sands Proving Ground, and reached an altitude of 244 miles and 62 miles above the line dividing the Earth's atmosphere and space. With the help of German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun, the US used the V-2 rocket to give Bumper 5 the altitude and velocity needed to make it to space.
