First Weather Satellite Launched

February 17, 1959 - Vanguard 2, an American satellite, is launched to measure cloud cover distribution. As the first weather satellite to be launched into space, Vanguard 2 was an important milestone in the space race against the Soviet Union. For the first 19 days of its orbit, Vanguard 2 used an optical scanner to collect cloud cover data during the daylight portion of its orbit. Vanguard 2 remains in orbit and continues to provide information on the density of the earth’s atmosphere.
