Astronomer Edwin Hubble Announces Discovery of Other Galaxies
December 30, 1924 - At a meeting of the American Astronomical Society, Edwin Hubble announces his discovery of other galaxies. Using the Hooker telescope at the Mount Wilson Observatory, Hubble calculated that the new stars he saw were over 860,000 light years away---8x farther than the farthest star in the Milky Way. In 1990, NASA named the Hubble telescope after him to honor his achievement. Read more about Hubble's life and work.
