Smiley Emoticon Invented
September 19, 1982 – Scott E. Fahlman, Carnegie Mellon University professor, invented the smiley :-) emoticon. While chatting on the university’s computer science general board, Fahlman suggested using a sequence including a colon, a dash, and closing parenthesis to differentiate jokes from serious posts.
