Smiley Emoticon Invented

September 19, 1982 – Scott E. Fahlman, Carnegie Mellon University professor, invented the smiley :-) emoticon. While chatting on the university’s computer science general board, Fahlman suggested using a sequence including a colon, a dash, and closing parenthesis to differentiate jokes from serious posts. In the same message, he also proposed the use of the :-( emoticon. Within just a few months, the symbols were widespread within Usenet and ARPANET, which were the precursor networks to the internet. Read the full story of how the emoticon came to be and how far they've come.
