October 10, 1846 – British astronomer William Lassell discovers Triton just 17 days after Neptune itself had been discovered. Lassell used a 24-inch reflecting telescope that he constructed himself with his own technique for polishing the mirror. Lassell would go on to discover two moons of Uranus, and an inner ring of Saturn the same night as another astronomer William Bond.
