First Version of Java Released

January 16, 2003 - Sun Microsystems releases the first version of Java. Originally called Oak by lead developer James Gosling, Java was revolutionary for internet-based applications with its "write once, run anywhere" (WORA) approach. Compiled Java code could run on all platforms that support Java without the need for recompilation.
