Space Shuttle Columbia launches on its final mission
January 16, 2003 - Space Shuttle Columbia launches for its final mission. In over 22 years of service, Columbia made 28 missions, orbiting Earth 4,808 times. Space Shuttle Columbia was the first of five Space Shuttle orbiters to fly in space. Just 16 days after its final launch, Columbia met a tragic end, as the shuttle disintegrated on re-entry, resulting in the loss of all seven crew members. Considered to be one of the three major tragedies in NASA History, the crews of Columbia, Challenger, Apollo 1, and others lost in the pursuit of space are honored during NASA's Day of Remembrance.
