Glenn Orbits Earth
February 20, 1962 - John Glenn becomes the first American to orbit Earth in the Friendship 7, Mercury-Atlas 6 spacecraft. This was the United States' first crewed mission. Glenn orbited three times in just under 5 hours, re-entering Earth's atmosphere and splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean. NASA achieved this goal using the IBM 7030 Stretch supercomputer, the fastest computer in the world at this time.Read more about John Glenn's historic orbit.
